SLU News Studio

our work

project
description

At Southeastern Louisiana University, the launch of the Robin Roberts Broadcast Media Center was a moment of transformation. The new center added 33,000 square feet of space to D Vickers Hall as part of a $40 million renovation—an investment in creativity, communication, and the power of student voices. Within it, the university envisioned a custom news studio where future journalists could learn their craft in a setting built to support their growth. We were invited to help bring that vision to life by turning a scenic design into a vibrant, working news environment.

the
challenge

The studio needed to serve many roles at once. It had to be visually compelling, technically adaptable, and durable enough to support years of student-led productions. The challenge was to transform a detailed design into a real-world environment that could grow alongside the people using it.

solution

description

We collaborated with SLU theatre professor Steve Schepker and his talented team to translate their design into a hands-on space built with intention. At the heart of the studio, we installed a raised anchor desk with soft LED lighting, flanked by modular columns of light and a vibrant backdrop made of custom wood panels, integrated screens, and hand-finished faux brickwork that echoes the character of the campus. Nearby, we created a flexible interview area with a round wooden platform, Art Deco-inspired screens, and bold brick-style columns accented by illuminated “S” emblems. A wall of windows offers the option for natural light or a more intimate setup, depending on the tone of the production. Furnishings were selected to move and shift easily, giving students the freedom to experiment and adapt. Every detail was shaped with care to help create a space where young storytellers can explore their voice and their future.
